How to Install Guttering
A practical checklist you can follow for most uPVC gutter systems. Always follow the specific manufacturer instructions for your system.
What you will need
- Gutter lengths, unions, angles, stop ends, outlet
- Brackets and appropriate fixings for your fascia material
- Downpipe, offsets, bends, shoes, and clips
- Tape measure, spirit level, drill, fine-tooth saw or cutter
Steps
- Plan the run and downpipe position. Decide where water needs to discharge and ensure you have a clear path to a drain.
- Set the fall. Mark a small fall from the high point towards the outlet so water flows reliably.
- Install the brackets. Use the spacing recommended by the manufacturer. Add extra support near fittings.
- Cut and fit the gutters. Cut square, remove burrs, and clip into place.
- Fit the outlet and downpipe. Clip and secure, then check alignment to avoid strain on joints.
- Test. Run water through the system to confirm flow and identify leaks before finishing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too little fall which can cause standing water.
- Insufficient bracket support near joints and outlets.
- Overusing sealant on systems that rely on rubber seals.
