How to Choose Pipe Fittings

Use this checklist to avoid ordering the wrong size or connection type. When in doubt, match the fitting to the pipe manufacturer and system.

Steps

  1. Identify the system. Waste, soil, rainwater, underground drainage, or pressurised water all use different standards.
  2. Measure the size. Use the nominal size and confirm diameter. Avoid guessing.
  3. Pick the fitting type. Bend, tee, coupler, reducer, adaptor, or access piece depending on the job.
  4. Match the connection method. Solvent weld, push-fit, compression, or ring seal. Stick to one method per joint unless specified.
  5. Confirm compatibility. Check internal or external rating, temperature limits, and chemical resistance.

Common checks

  • Do you need a male or female adaptor to connect to a trap or appliance.
  • Do you need access for rodding or inspection.
  • Is the run horizontal or vertical, and will it need clips or supports.
